Mallika Sherawat, regarded as Bollywood’s best kisser, spells out her ambitious plans to take on Hollywood.
“Sexy is just one part of me,” said Mallika matter-of-factly during this backstage chat at the Kuala Lumpur International Film Festival (KLIFF 2008). Mallika also attended the Global Brand Forum last weekend.
“There’s more to come from me, acting-wise.” She is of course, talking about her buzzworthy Hollywood-financed Bollywood project, Hisss. Directed by indie filmmaker Jennifer Lynch (David Lynch’s daughter), the India-set mystery is tipped to boost Mallika’s profile as an A-list actress worldwide.
“We’re taking the Indian legend of a shape-shifting snake to Hollywood,” enthused the actress. “I’m thrilled to play the snake-woman.”
And no, Hollywood studios with Indian interests are not pulling out of Bollywood after the recent terrorist attacks on Mumbai, India’s movie capital.
“Jennifer and her crew shot the entire film in various locations in India,” assured Mallika. “We’re already in post-production now.”
Lynch aside, Will Smith’s Overbrook Entertainment has inked a deal to produce two movies with Indian entertainment company, UTV.
Trust the Bollywood sexpot to make sound remarks about current affairs. After all, the conservative segments in India, including the Indian press, would like to hang her out to dry for speaking her mind all the time.
“If a chemical drug like Viagra is accepted by society and by the world to ignite desire, then what is the problem with my audio-visual called cinema which ignites desire?” Mallika was once famously quoted. “Both are basically doing the same thing!”
From Viagra to the Mumbai blast to Datuk Shah Rukh Khan, the dare-bare act proves that she is also no bimbo. “I’m aware of the controversy surrounding Shah Rukh’s Datukship,” she opined. “But I think it’s a good thing. Malaysia now has a Bollywood connection.”
Well, Shah Rukh may have his Malaysian connection, but Mallika has her Hollywood link.
It turns out that Hisss is not her only deal with Tinseltown. Come next year, you’ll get to see the actress in The Aquarian Gospel, a semi-religious film that explores the missing years in Jesus Christ’s early life, somewhere when he was between 13 and 30.
According to Mallika, the more popular belief is that Jesus had visited Kashmir. And the movie chronicles his journey from Israel as a young boy, through India, Tibet, Persia, Greece and Egypt, where he meets people of all creeds and sages from different faith. “We’ve already finished the principle photography,” she declared, beaming with pride.
The actress plays Saraswati, one of Jesus’s loyal friends whom he bonds with while he travels through India.
“Saraswati is celibate (a brahmacharini),” she gives a gist of her character. “It’s a nice contrast to the kind of image I’m known for.”
Nice, but controversial. Yes, that is so Mallika.
“Who cares what people say about me? I am right on the ball,” she has been quoted as saying about her controversial choice of films (and public persona) in a previous interview. “And I don’t think one should take oneself too seriously.
“Be like the Buddha, I always say, smile through life. It will immediately look better.”
Now, if only her love life could be better, too.
Mallika, despite her status as Bollywood’s kissing queen, has surprisingly managed to stay man-free. You don’t even hear the slightest romantic rumour about her. Well, she has admitted to being married once, but that was before she joined the film industry.
“I use my free time to read scripts and prepare for my next starring roles,” she said, with the longest of smiles.

Having previously been voted one of Asia’s 100 most beautiful people by “Cover,” the Hong Kong-based fashion and beauty magazine, Sherawat seemed a bit taken aback by the fact that she had been presented with an award from the Multicultural Motion Picture Association, which hosted the awards night.
“Miracles do happen,” she told India-West during her walk down the red carpet. “I’m told that I’m the first Indian actress to be getting this award, but I’ve always considered myself a citizen of the world, so I don’t want to pigeon-hole myself. The more ingredients in a dish, the more interesting it is.”
Though born Reema Lamba, Sherawat, who went on to earn a degree in philosophy from Miranda House at Delhi University, adopted the screen name “Mal lika” (which means “empress”) to avoid confusion with other actresses named Reema.
The concept of the Diversity Awards, created by the MMPA, was founded on the ideal that a wide variety of talents should be honored for the roles they have played and continue to play and bestow appreciation upon their commitment to the pursuit of excellence in their craft.
Sherawat has just finished shooting “The Hiss,” directed by Jennifer Lynch, the daughter of famed director David Lynch, which also co-stars Irfaan Khan “It’s my first American movie with an American director,” she told India-West.
The film is about “the ancient legend of the shape-shifting snake, which is very popular in the Far East and the eastern countries,” she explained, adding that “I definitely want to work here (in Hollywood), and a lot of interesting opportunities are coming my way, and I want to make the most of it.”

In our childhood, we have all made sand castles and played household games where we pretended to cook food items using leaves and flowers. But as we grow up, our dreams also become bigger in terms of bigger houses, cars and careers.
Now in this era of “bigger is better”, can you imagine an actress who loves to live in a hut? The question may look childish and crazy, but the fact is that a hut is being built for a hot and happening actress in Bollywood at Vizhinjam near well-known Kovalam beach in Kerala. She is none other than sex doll Mallika Sherawat!
Although the exact location of the hut is not revealed, reports indicate that the hut is coming up on a small hilltop and one has to reach the place on foot. "There is no road for cars. This is a one hall and one bedroom hut built with mud. It overlooks the majestic Arabian Sea near Vizhinjam," G. Shankar, chief of Habitat Technology Group who is working on the hut, revealed.
The roof of the hut would be finalized once Mallika arrives concurs. Most probably, it would be made of bamboo and tiles. Mallika is expected to arrive here in the next few days and give the final approval to complete her home, he added. The hut will be ready in two months.
The builders have taken abundant caution with the design according to the coastal zone regulation rules which prohibit all permanent constructions within a prescribed distance from the sea. Why did the actress choose to build such a small shelter near the beach? Will it become another crazy trend among stars? If so, it will surely boost our tourism economy to a certain extent!

Bollywood’s oomph girl Mallika Sherawat will soon don the role of an Ichaa-dhaari Nagin in her forthcoming Hollywood flick.
This fantasy film is based on the popular mythology of the snake woman who is able to take on human form by her will.
Hollywood filmmaker Jennifer Lynch, daughter of Oscar nominee and Cannes Film Festival winner David Lynch, is in Mumbai to shoot a film with Mallika Sherawat and Irrfan Khan.
The film, Naagin - The Snake Woman will be shot in Chennai and the backwaters of Kerala with an Indian cast and American villain. This makes Jennifer the first Hollywood director to actually shoot a Hindi language film.
“Don’t perceive me as a Western director, but just another director who’s hoping to give a good film to the world,” the director says.
“Essentially, at the heart of every story, there is love. So when director Govind Menon and producer Vikram approached me with the subject, I was spellbound. We have fables of vampires and Cindrellas, and you guys have such interesting legends about snakes. It’s super cool to be a Nagin! I come from a country where snakes are looked down upon and associated with negative energy. Here, snakes are worshipped,” exclaimed Jennifer whose last film, Surveillance, starring Bill Pullman and Julia Ormond premiered at Cannes in June.
According to the filmmaker, the world believes India is a snake charmers’ country, but nobody knows the real story behind this misconception. Jennifer intends to dispel this myth with a classy, musical murder mystery made with special effects.
On why she chose Mallika for the role, Jennifer explained, “She has it in her. Her body is the hallmark of most of her films, but I am focusing on the sensuality of her face and her eyes.”
Mallika fans won’t be disappointed as well. “There are scenes where she will be the babe she is in real life, there are sensually done songs,” laughed Jennifer, “I feel Mallika has that crossover quality, I will help her achieve that, she’s definitely made for bigger things."
Never been more excited! I’ve been a huge fan of her father and Blue Velvet’s one of my favourite films of all time. I also loved Jennifer’s last film, Surveillance. I’m now super excited about working with Rob Kurtzman on the film. He’s done all the Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez films and also the Evil Dead films. The other international film has taken some time as the script has been going through rewrites.

Mallika Sherawat is to play the role of Jesus Christ's confidante in an American film called The Aquarian Gospel. The Australian-born Drew Heriot, director of the docu-feature, The Secret (2006), which sold the largest number of DVDs in the USA that year, is helming the film.
The Bible is silent on Christ's life between 13 and 30, and down the centuries, many theories have been constructed about what he did in these years. Among the more popular beliefs is that Christ visited Kashmir. Heriot's film chronicles Jesus's journey from Israel as a young boy, through India, Tibet, Persia, Greece and Egypt.
In the movie, he encounters people of all creeds and meets sages from different faiths. Sherawat will play Saraswati, one of Yeshua's (Jesus) loyal friends whom he bonds with while he travels through India.
The actress, who has broken taboos in the Indian film industry with bold movies such as Khwaish and Murder, feels The Aquarian Gospel also breaks a different kind of taboo by discussing the "lost years" of Jesus. Saraswati is a celibate ‘yogini' (brahmacharini)—a nice contrast for an actress known as Bollywood's Bardot.
Heriot said, "Mallika is not just a pretty face, she is versatile, has a background in philosophy, so she will convey the richness of the subject matter."
"I find that in most mythological and spiritual film stories, women seem to be lacking in any true wisdom or a sense of humour," said Sherawat. "I look forward to bringing both these qualities to this character."
The script is written by John F Sullivan and William Sees Keenan, who were inspired by two books: the best-selling book The Unknown Life of Jesus Christ, which was written by Russian anthropologist Nicholas Notovich, whose journey to Tibet uncovered ancient scrolls describing the missing years of the life of Jesus, and The Aquarian Gospel of Jesus the Christ by evangelist Levi Dowling.

Mallika Sherawat turned up bright and early to learn the healthy way of living. The actress accompanied by her brother turned up at 5am at the Baba Ramdev yoga camp.
"I've always wanted to learn pranayams from Baba Ramdev and now this wish has come true,” says Mallika.
And if you were wondering why Mallika wanted to learn pranayams in the first place, Baba Ramdev has a pat reply to that question.“Mallika said that she would learn about mind and the soul later. However, she wanted to learn yoga to improve her body and get the glow on her skin. And even if she's learning yoga with that intention, it’s still great,” says Baba Ramdev

Why She's No.67?We can’t help but admire Mallika Sherawat’s dedication and perseverance, and there’s little doubt that her hard work is paying off -- not many Bollywood actresses can say they’ve costarred alongside someone as world-renowned as Jackie Chan. In 2007, Mallika Sherawat wowed her fans with performances in Guru, Aap Kaa Surroor: The Moviee - The Real Luv Story and Welcome. She is a legend in her home country of India, and judging by her upcoming roles in 2008's Ugly Aur Pagli and Fun in the Army, there are only more good things to come for this beauty.

Sherawat greeted people with salutes on the sets of Maan Gaye Mughall E Azam in her Anarkali get-up
Mallika Sherawat got so much into the skin of the character for her film Maan Gaye Mughall E Azam (MGMEA), that she started acting like Anarkali. Says a unit member, “Mallika plays a starlet and part of a theatre group in MGMEA. In one of the plays the group stages, she plays Anarkali.
After some time Mallika got so much into her character that she started greeting the cast members with a special ‘aadab’ like Anarkali, instead of the usual ‘hi’ or ‘hello’.
She also performed elaborate kathak steps for no rhyme or reason. It was funny to see her actually behaving like Anarkali!”
Director Sanjay Chel confirms Mallika’s little antics. “This was Mallika’s way of creating a fun atmosphere on the sets,” he justifies. “There were times when I would get stressed handling 18 actors on the sets and this was her way of diluting the grim atmosphere by bringing positive energy into it. She would salute all of us in Anarkali style and do some dance steps.”
Sanjay is all praise for Mallika, “I am in love with her! Her hunger for acting and eagerness to experiment and try new things is amazing. She’s also the most hassle-free actress I have worked with she’s always on time, attends every rehearsal and is totally undemanding. While Mallika is a spontaneous actress, Rahul Bose is methodical and disciplined and that generates lots of chemistry between them.”
Mallika’s look and styling in the film has been designed by Ashley Rebello and Anita Dongre.
The actress will also do a take-off on the Mughal-E-Azam song, informs producer Ratan Jain. “MGMEA is almost complete with only two songs remain to be shot. In the film Mallika will be seen in a whacky, sizzling hot number which is a kind of take-off on the song Pyar Kiya Toh Darna Kya. The song is yet to be shot.”

Mallika Sherawat is ready to step into Madhubala's shoes for her soon to be released comedy, Maan Gaye Mughall E Azam produced by Venus Records And Tapes Pvt Ltd.
Interestingly, the film has got a few similarities with the Dilip Kumar starrer classic Mughal E Azam. Besides the title, Maan Gaye Mughall E Azam also retains the popular song, Pyar kiya to darna kya, from the original.
The song is set in a completely different format. While the lyrics have been penned by Sanjay Chhel, Anu Malik has composed the music for it. Says Anu Malik, "The song Pyar kiya toh darna kya is one of the greatest songs in the history of Indian cinema. No one can ever make such a beautiful song nor can anyone copy Madhubala or even forget her performance in the song."
Since it's a comedy, the song comes across as one of the stage performances done by the cast in the film. Ratan Jain, the producer of the film, says "The song has been picturised on Mallika and although it has been inspired from the old classic, it will have a different tune altogether."
Adds Anu Malik "It so happens that the cast play stage performers who sing the song in their own comic style. Many funny lines have been incorporated without any intension to hurt anyone."
PNC’s next film directed by Sachin Kamlakar Khot has all the ingredients of an unusual love story. Khot says, “It’s a rom-com but an unusual love story.
One expects the boy and girl to behave in a certain manner as romance comes with certain notions attached to it, but in Ugly Aur Pagli you will find this unique couple (Ranvir Sheorey and Mallika Sherawat) who re-define the notion of love and romance.”
Rangita Nandy adds, “We’ve heard of sweet romances coated in sugar. Now get set for a romance with a punch, some thuds and a whole load of serious arm-twisting. This is Bollywood’s quirkiest, kinkiest, funniest romance. It’s basically a vicious love story.”
Talking about her characters Rangita says, “Ranvir is Ugly a total nerd who believes he’s God’s gift to womankind while Pagli (Mallika) is a violent woman who looks at love like war.”
“Pagli doesn’t hesitate to pick up a fight with anybody. Nobody messes with Pagli pretty much what Mallika is like in real life. In fact in this film she saw a lot of herself in the character in many ways,” adds Rangita
Mallika’s look is unique, “We have given her a very 2008 look, hair coloured and with bangs. Ashley Rebello and Mallika have worked together on the concept. Ugly Aur Pagli will be a film where Ranvir will look his best.”
One of the highlights of the film according to Rangita is, “There’s a song where Mallika plays out every fantasy men can think of. She plays every sexy character that you have ever seen on screen. I really don’t care what Mallika is to the rest of the world but there’s a phenomenal audience who swears by her.”
